The paper was formed from the merger of The San Diego Union and The San Diego Tribune in 1992, The Union-Tribune has been in circulation since 1868, making it one of the oldest newspapers in San Diego. The Union Tribune was owned by The Copley Press, then was sold to Platinum Equity and later to the Tribune Publishing, a publishing company that owns several newspapers across the United States.
