STS-122 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Atlantis. The mission launched on February 7, 2008, and was the sixteenth shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to deliver and install the European Space Agency’s Columbus laboratory to the ISS. The Columbus laboratory was a research facility that would allow the ISS crew to perform a variety of experiments in the fields of biology, materials science, and other disciplines. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the rotation of the crew of the ISS.
