STS-109 was a Space Shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) flown by Space Shuttle Columbia. The mission launched on March 1, 2002, and was the fourth servicing mission to the HST. The primary objective of the mission was to install new instruments and make repairs to the telescope, including the installation of a new Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the replacement of the telescope’s solar panels. The mission also included the first use of the robot arm-based Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) pod to repair the telescope’s insulation.
