The Magyar Szocialista P rt (Socialist Party of Hungary, or MSZP) is a social democratic political party in Hungary. It was founded in 1989, following the collapse of the communist regime in the country, and has been a major force in Hungarian politics since then. The MSZP positions itself as a progressive party that supports social justice, economic equality, and the protection of workers’ rights. It has traditionally been the main rival to the conservative Fidesz party, and has held power at various times since the 1990s. The MSZP has been represented in the Hungarian parliament since the first democratic elections in 1990, and has also participated in several local and European elections.
