The history of the Bijenkorf begins in 1870, when Philip Simon Goudsmit opens a small haberdashery shop on Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam, which he calls Magazijn de Bijenkorf. Business is going well and in 1915 the store moves to the well-known building on Dam Square. The second store in The Hague followed in 1926 and the Rotterdam Bijenkorf opened its doors in 1930. This is followed by Eindhoven, Utrecht, Amstelveen and Maastricht. There were once a number of smaller stores in Groningen, Den Bosch and Arnhem, among others, but since 2014 the chain consists of seven stores.
