The company was founded in 1970 by Gene Amdahl, who was a former IBM employee and architect of the IBM System/360 mainframe. Amdahl Corporation was based in Sunnyvale, California. The company’s flagship product was the Amdahl 470V/6 mainframe, which was fully compatible with IBM’s System/360 and System/370 systems and could run the same software.
