Hamas is a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist organization. It is the de facto governing authority of the Gaza Strip, an area of Palestine. Hamas was founded in 1987 as an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Its goal is to establish an independent Islamic state in Palestine. The group has been labeled a terrorist organization by several countries and international organizations, including the United States, the European Union, and Israel. Despite this, it continues to have significant support among the Palestinian population, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
