The California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans, was founded in 1895. It was originally known as the California State Highway Commission, and was responsible for building and maintaining the state’s highway system. In 1973, the agency was renamed the California Department of Transportation and its responsibilities expanded to include other forms of transportation, such as railroads and public transit. Today, Caltrans is a major state agency with more than 18,000 employees and an annual budget of over $13 billion.
