The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The CMS is responsible for administering the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which provide health insurance coverage to millions of Americans, including seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income individuals and families. The CMS also administers the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which provides health coverage to children in families with low or moderate incomes. In addition, the CMS is responsible for implementing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which aims to expand access to health insurance and improve the quality and affordability of health care in the United States.
