STS-114 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Discovery. The mission launched on July 26, 2005, and was the first shuttle mission after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. The primary objective of the mission was to test and evaluate new safety procedures and techniques implemented in the wake of the Columbia disaster, including the use of a sensor-equipped boom to inspect the shuttle’s thermal protection system for damage. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the installation of a spare gyroscope on the station.
