The United States Department of Labor (DOL) is a cabinet-level department of the federal government responsible for overseeing labor and employment issues. It was established in 1913, following the passage of the Department of Labor Act by Congress. The DOL’s mission is to “foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights.” The DOL is headed by the Secretary of Labor, who is appointed by the President of the United States.
