The STS-103 mission was a Space Shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) flown by Space Shuttle Discovery. The mission launched on December 19, 1999, and was the third servicing mission to the HST. The primary objective of the mission was to install new instruments and make repairs to the telescope, including the installation of a new Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) and the installation of new insulation. The mission also included the first use of the robot arm-based Inspection Boom Sensor System (IBSS) to inspect the shuttle’s thermal protection system (TPS). The STS-103 mission patch features the Space Shuttle Discovery with the Hubble Space Telescope in the foreground and the Earth in the background. The patch also includes the mission slogan “Bringing the Universe into Focus” and the names of the seven crew members.
