Lisp Machines Inc. (LMI) was a computer manufacturer founded in the late 1970s, that designed and produced Lisp machines, specialized computers that ran the Lisp programming language. Lisp was intended for artificial intelligence (AI) research and development, and the company’s machines were designed to support this field of work. LMI was based in Massachusetts, USA. The company developed several Lisp machine models, including the CADR, the LMI-CADR, and the XL400. Lisp machines had a great performance but they were quite expensive and only a few hundred were sold. Due to the high cost and the lack of market demand, Lisp Machines Inc. struggled financially and was eventually acquired by Symbolics, another Lisp machine manufacturer.
