The National Park Service (NPS) is an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior that is responsible for the management and conservation of the national parks in the United States. The NPS was established in 1916 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The NPS oversees more than 400 national parks, monuments, and other designated areas in the United States, which are home to a diverse range of natural, cultural, and historical resources. The NPS works to preserve these resources for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of present and future generations.
